2008 Spring & Summer Hikes!

May 17 - Stecoah Gap with Wildcrafter and Naturalist, Ila Hatter

Distance: 2 miles - easy

Time: Meet at 8 am to carpool. The hike begins at 10 am.

Ila will point out some interesting plants and talk about the history of the valley and the propsed road through Stecoah called Corridor K. For more information on Ila Hatter, check out www.wildcrafting.com

June 14 - Big Frog Wilderness with Tennessee Field Organizer, Jeff Hunter
Distance: 12 miles - very strenuous
Time: 9:00 AM, RSVP to receive meeting location
We'll take the Big Creek Trail to the summit of Big Frog Mountain , which is the heart of the Wilderness.  After enjoying lunch we'll return on the same route.

June 21 – Old Growth at Harmon Den Mountain with Josh Kelly

Distance: 4 miles,- strenuous

Time:  9 a.m. to carpool. The hike begins at 10 am.

Hike Details:  This 4 mile hike will include walking on gated forest service roads and a short distance of very steep, very rugged, off-trail  hiking.  Participants must be in good physical condition and be able to hike over steep, rocky ground. We will visit the Harmon Den Timber Sale and an unprotected patch of old-growth oak-hickory forest.

July 12 - Little Frog Wilderness with Tennessee Field Organizer, Jeff Hunter
Distance: 5.3 miles - moderate
Time:  8:00 AM, RSVP to receive meeting location
We'll take the Benton MacKaye Trail from Kim sey Highway to US 64.  A car shuttle is required, as are long pants.

August 2 – Bent Creek Mtn. Bike Trek with Jody Flemming

Distance: 8-12 miles - Intermediate ountain biking skills

Time: 10 am

The Bent Creek Experimental Forest encompasses Bent Creek's watershed, and contains a collection of trails that is well suited to beginning and intermediate mountain bikers, families, and groups. With some trails containing large climbs and technical sections, more advanced riders can fun here as well.  Plan on riding 8-12 miles depending on group consensus.  Bent Creek is not the most difficult riding in Pisgah, but participants need to be in good physical condition and comfortable riding narrow singletrack with rocks and roots thrown in.

August 16 - Bald River Gorge Wilderness with TN Field Organizer, Jeff Hunter
Distance: 9.6 miles - moderate
Time: 9:00 AM, RSVP to receive meeting location
This out and back hike will follow the Bald River through the heart of the Bald River Gorge Wilderness.  Possibilities exist for swimming, so plan accordingly.
