"Appalachia" is a celebration of mountain people, culture and geography. We are hosting the NC premier of this PBS film. All proceeds will benefit SAFC and Southwings.

September 27 - Mackey Mountain with SAFC's own, Hugh Irwin
- Distance: 6 miles, moderate
- Time: 8:30 am to carpool
- Hike down Buckeye Knob Trail with great views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. We will leave the ridge to hike down to beautiful Mackey Creek. The hike passes through some very nice old growth stands.
September 13 - Citico Creek Wilderness with SAFC's Tennessee Field Organizer, Jeff Hunter
- Distance: 7 miles - strenuous
- Time: 9:00 AM, RSVP to receive meeting location
- This hike along the Jeffrey Hell, South Fork Citico, and Benton MacKaye trails will explore the Wilderness north of the Cherohala Skyway. Expect several creek fords. A short car shuttle is required.
September 6 - Ramsey Cascade Trail with Josh Kelly
- Distance: 8 miles, strenuous
- Time: 8 am to carpool, or 9:45 at the trail head.
- Follow Ramsey Prong through one of the least human altered forests in eastern North America to a 100 ft. waterfall. Along the way the trail passes yellow poplars in excess of 7 ft. in diameter and the largest known black cherries in the world.
August 16 - Bald River Gorge Wilderness with SAFC's Tennessee Field Organizer, Jeff Hunter
- Distance: 9.6 miles - moderate
- Time: 9:00 AM, RSVP to receive meeting location
- This out and back hike will follow the Bald River through the heart of the Bald River Gorge Wilderness. Possibilities exist for swimming, so plan accordingly.
August 2 - Bent Creek Mountain Bike Trek with SAFC's own Jody Flemming
- Distance: 8-12 miles, intermediate mountain biking skills
- Time: 10 am
- Participants need to be in good physical condition and comfortable riding narrow singletrack with rocks and roots thrown in.
July 12 - Little Frog Wilderness with SAFC's Tennessee Field Organizer, Jeff Hunter
- Distance: 5.3 miles - moderate
- Time: 8:00 AM, RSVP to receive meeting location
- We'll take the Benton MacKaye Trail from Kimsey Highway to US 64. A car shuttle is required, as are long pants.
June 14 - Big Frog Wilderness with SAFC's Tennessee Field Organizer. Jeff Hunter
- Distance: 12 miles - very strenuous
- Time: 9 am - RSVP to receive meeting location
- We'll take the Big Creek Trail to the summit of Big Frog Mountain, which is the heart of the Wilderness. After enjoying lunch we'll return on the same route.
May 17 - Stecoah Gap with Naturalist, Ila Hatter!
- Distance: 2 miles - easy
- Time: Meet at 8 am to carpool. The hike begins at 10 am.
- Ila will point out some interesting plants and talk about the history of the valley and the propsed road through Stecoah called Corridor K. For more information on Ila Hatter, check out www.wildcrafting.com
